How to Spend the First 30 Minutes of Your Day

by Backpacker Jivko

2020 has been one hell of a year. Recently in almost every direction you look to there’s talk about either Covid-19 or the George Floyd killing protests. During these times it can get very easy to feel down, depressed, and be filled with negativity. I’m here to share a way that can help you get through all this.

Did you know

What you do in the first 30 minutes of your day can change the outcome of the remaining 23 and a half hours. There are many small things you can add and eliminate from your daily morning routine that can help you stay positive, feel motivated, maximize productivity, and overall give you some sense of peace.

What to do in the First 30 Minutes of your Day

Drink a Glass of Water

As soon as you open your eyes, drink a glass of water. Chug it if you have to. It will kickstart your whole system. During sleep our bodies tend to get dehydrated. Dehydration is strongly linked to decreased mental performance, meaning that completing tasks, such as memorizing or learning new things, becomes more difficult

Make Your Bed

This is the fastest and easiest success-driven decision you can make. It will instantly give you a burst of satisfaction that will motivate you to continue completing tasks all day long. By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also remind you of the fact that the little things in life do matter.

Gratitude Practice

Sit down somewhere, it can even be on the floor by your bedside. Then either write down or think about everything that you’re grateful to have in your life. Gratitude is strongly associated with your overall happiness. It helps you feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, and deal with adversity.

Set Intentions

I am not talking about setting goals here. Setting intentions means that you’re telling yourself how you intend to feel today. Example could be “May I be filled with happiness, may I experience lots of joy, may I feel motivated, and may I show loving-kindness to everyone around me”.

It’s also possible to set negative intentions. If you begin your day with thinking “Im going to have a bad day, I will be lazy, I will feel sad or angry” then most likely your day will be like that since that’s what you intend it to be.

Stretching

When you sleep, muscles relax, blood flow decreases, and your heart rate slows. If you are lying in the same position all night, your muscles tend to tighten up. There are countless benefits to starting your day with stretching. It’s a great way to get your blood flowing. It helps you connect your mind to your body. It will improve your posture, increase mobility for the day, and even relieve stress.

Meditation

This is the key to it all. Meditation will help you become quicker at becoming aware of yourself being lost in thought or being controlled by emotions. All it takes is to sit down for 5 minutes and practice being in the present moment. Allowing yourself to get lost in thought, then gently becoming aware, and transitioning back to the breath or present moment.

Me Time

Set aside some time to “Think”. What I mean by this is to just give yourself 5 minutes to sit in silence and think about absolutely anything. This may seem stupid since you’re probably thinking that you’re always thinking. However, giving yourself this time will get all those thoughts out of the way for the rest of the day. You’ll know that you already thought about these things and can focus more on being in the present moment.

What not to do

Go on Social Media

Check Emails, Voice Mails, and Texts

Hit the Snooze Button

Take a Hot Shower

Put Off Exercise

Final Remarks

Incorporating these daily habits into the first 30 minutes of your day could be difficult at first. It will require a lot of discipline and strength. However, just being aware of them and doing your best to complete them will guarantee you an instant reward. Give it a try, just after one day of attempting this you’ll notice that your whole day will be brighter and filled with more positivity. It not only affects you, but everyone else around you. You’ll be creating an atmosphere that everyone in the world will be able to benefit from.
